Course Learning Objectives

  • Explore the legislation around children and families, equality, the EYFS and UN Rights of the Child.
  • Discover how we use our senses, and what this looks like when there is hypersensitivity or hyposensitivity.
  • Apply the Graduated Approach and create our own SMART targets for our child scenarios.
Special Educational Needs, Disabilities and Inclusion 1

As part of our Toolkit Training, we will be exploring the key principles of the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) code of practice, such as considering the process that we would need to follow for early identification of developmental delays and implementing strategies within our nurseries that support children with additional needs. We will also guide our trainees on how best to have professional and positive conversations with our key families about suspected developmental delays.

Key principles in this session include:

  • 7 senses – sight, smell, pressure, movement, hearing, touch, taste
  • Hypo and hypersensitivity
  • Legislation – Equality Act 2010, Children and Families Act 2014 and EYFS 2023
  • UN Convention on the Rights for the Child
  • The Graduated Approach
  • The role of the SENDCo
  • What children can do, not what they can’t
  • SMART targets
